The ouroboros is the depiction of a snake eating its own tail. The symbolic meaning of the ouroboros is both infinty and the cycle of birth and death. Nao writes in her diary: "Imagine a ring of snakes, each biting the tail of the one ahead of it." (13) The ouroboros nods to the Buddhist idea of impermanence. The ring of the snake eating its tail enhances the idea of impermanence.
